As someone who’s been setting up guitars for a good while now, I’ve seen it all when it comes to instrument issues.
Today, I want to chat about something that’s often overlooked but super important: knowing when your guitar needs a little TLC in the form of a guitar setup.
First things first, what’s a guitar setup?
It’s basically a tune-up for your guitar. I adjust all the little bits that make your instrument play and sound great. It’s not just a luxury – it’s essential maintenance that keeps your guitar in top shape and prevents small issues from becoming big headaches down the road. And it’s not just top of the line guitars that benefit from a setup – even cheap guitars need a guitar setup.
If you want to know more about this, check out my post why you need a guitar setup.
So, how do you know when it’s time to bring your axe in for a setup? Here are the top 5 signs I see all the time:
1. Buzzing Strings
Ever played a note and heard an annoying buzz? That’s your strings hitting the frets when they shouldn’t be. It could be because your action (string height) is too low, your frets are uneven, or your neck’s a bit out of whack.
During a setup, I’ll adjust the action, the neck reflief and make sure everything’s aligned properly to get rid of that pesky fret buzz.
2. Tuning Troubles
If you find yourself constantly fighting to keep your guitar in tune, or it slips out of tune faster than you can play your favorite riff, something’s up.
This could be due to worn-out tuners, strings that aren’t wound properly, or intonation issues. I’ll check all of these during a setup to make sure your guitar stays in tune while you’re rocking out.
3. Action Issues
The “action” is how high your strings sit above the fretboard. If it’s too high, playing can feel like a workout. Too low, and you’ll get that buzz we talked about earlier.
Changes in humidity, temperature, or just general wear and tear can mess with your action. I’ll adjust the truss rod and bridge to get that sweet spot where playing feels effortless.
4. Uncomfortable Playability
If your guitar used to feel great but now it’s just… off, it might be time for a setup. Maybe the neck doesn’t feel quite right, or certain frets are giving you trouble.
This discomfort often comes from small changes in the neck relief, nut height, or fret wear. A good setup will address all of these issues, making your guitar feel like new again.
5. Poor Intonation
Here’s a tricky one – your open strings are in tune, but as soon as you play up the neck, things start sounding off. That’s an intonation issue.
It can happen due to changes in string length, bridge saddle position, or even fret wear. Fixing intonation is a key part of any setup, ensuring your guitar plays in tune all over the neck.
So there you have it – the top 5 signs your guitar might be due for a setup. If you’re noticing any of these issues, don’t wait for them to get worse.
A little maintenance goes a long way in keeping your guitar playing and sounding its best.
As a rule of thumb, I recommend getting a setup at least once a year, or more often if you play frequently or notice persistent issues. It’s a small investment that pays off big time in your guitar’s longevity and your playing enjoyment.
